Why We’re Slightly Obsessed with Drawers

Drawers in a kitchen can transform storage and function

We’ve been telling clients for years to think seriously about drawers in kitchens. And like all good advice… when we built our own kitchen, we totally ignored it.

Haha, only joking. We went ‘all in’. Drawers everywhere. And honestly… the difference has been transformational.

“We didn’t realise how much cupboards were annoying us….until we stopped using them.”

It sounds dramatic to say that about something as ordinary as drawers, but when you live with them day to day, you realise how much friction traditional cupboards create. You open a cupboard and immediately start shifting things around. Items disappear to the back. You kneel down, lean in, pull things out, put them back…

Drawers quietly fix all of that.

Everything comes to you. You can see front to back in one glance. Nothing gets lost. You’re not rearranging half a cupboard to reach the one thing you actually want. Storage stops being a rummage and starts feeling effortless.

The real surprise is capacity. A well-planned drawer system almost always holds more than people expect – because the space is organised, accessible and genuinely usable, not just technically there.

Living with this setup has reinforced something we’ve always believed: drawers don’t just make a kitchen tidier – they change how it works. Prep feels smoother. Clean-up is quicker. Everyday items actually live where they’re meant to.

“Turns out the biggest kitchen upgrade wasn’t fancy – it was drawers. Lot’s of them.”

And if you’re worried about aesthetics, drawers don’t have to look like drawers. You can design them to read as cupboard doors, keep clean lines, add internal drawers, dividers and inserts – whatever suits how you use the space.

It’s one of those decisions that seems small on paper but makes a huge difference in real life.

We still design cupboards where they make sense. But if there’s one thing we now recommend with even more conviction, it’s this:

Don’t underestimate the power of a really good drawer.

Sometimes the biggest upgrade in a kitchen isn’t what you see… it’s how effortlessly it works.
